Beyond The Seams

I love learning about fun insights into every day items. This is also seen in my ‘Artful Echoes’ project. I knew I wanted to take an item that was seemingly ordinary and explain its depth in the form of a magazine. I’m really interested in fashion and the history behind certain items, so I originally looked at different garments and researched what made them interesting, if anything. T-shirts really stood out to me because everyone owns one, wether you are the richest person on earth or the poorest. I found that idea really fascinating and wanted to run with it. With each edition, this magazine explores the history, politics, and socio-cultural impact that a specific clothing item has, and the edition I have created is T-shirts. The magazine is aimed at people who love the in depth history around fashion.

I spent most of my time researching and finding what I believed to be the most compelling and interesting facts about T-shirts, and split them into history, politics, and pop culture. I absolutely love doing interviews and photography in my work and really wanted to include people’s personal insights about T-shirts and show their is such a brilliant range of reasons why people own them. I put all of the research into a document and then did interviews. I bought lots of T-shirts second hand and painted the chapter headings onto them. If I continued with ‘Beyond The Seams’, I would make another edition that excites me a lot, which is corsets! This is an edition that I made a cover for.
